-Creative process-

I was reading a star wars book, and was inspired to create “Rescue” after reading about a rescue in the book. I would have done many things different if I repainted this artwork. At the time I was not as knowledgeable of perspective and color as I am now, but I will always be learning new things, and after every artwork I create I am sure I will feel I could have done better on certain aspects of the image.
A concept sketch was drawn in Photoshop, with my Wacom Intous 2, to act as a guide to where things would go in the final painting. Over the course of making rescue it evolved and changed into something I could never have imagined at the beginning when I was creating the concept art. For this artwork I used mainly Photoshop’s built in brushes, but I have found lately that it is much more effective to use custom brushes to get certain textures and emotion in an image.
It was a little frustrating working on the artwork because every time I would move a layer or paint something new, Photoshop would render it, and that took up a lot of my time. This problem was mainly due to the large amount of layers, artwork size, and my outdated computer system. Another thing that made matters worse was saving the file and opening the Photoshop file, the 450 megabyte Photoshop file took 30 minutes to open and about the same amount of time to save, but this wasn’t much of a problem until I got to the halfway point. Every critical part of the image was painted on a new layer; I use way too many layers, and am working on lowering the layer count in my artworks. I’m addicted to layers. To prevent data loss, I always make another backup file of the artwork, and work with a backup power supply connected to my computer.
The large bottom craft was repainted three times until I got the look I wanted. One thing I regret is painting so many details everywhere on the artwork. But it was just a practice artwork, so I had the freedom to experiment and try out new technique. Practice makes perfect, and that’s why I do it.

- the making-
How long did it take? 44 hours
How many photoshop layers ? 356
How large is the image? 6000 x 3000 pixels
How big is the file ? 753 megs
I used a KB gear pablo 6x 8 tablet for half of it. Then when that broke I got a Wacom intuos 2 9 x 12 tablet.
Don't know what a tablet is ? Go to wacom.com

After five years on dA, this picture definately deserves more attention. The awesome contrast, the starting ships and the burning buildings make this picture extraordinary. Make sure to check out the rest of his amazing gallery. (Featured by ^taenaron)
